Conquer Madeira in 3 Days: Your Intense Island Exploration Itinerary

Hey adventurers! Madeira is calling, and you’re just in time to answer with this epic 3-day itinerary. Get ready for heart-pounding hikes, breathtaking views, and soaking up the vibrant culture of this Portuguese island paradise.

Logistics

  • Accommodation: We recommend staying in Funchal, the capital city. We found great deals on Airbnbs, especially when traveling with a group.
  • Rental Car: Exploring Madeira is best by car. We had a smooth experience renting with Enterprise at the airport – easy pickup and dropoff!

Day 1: Funchal First Impressions

  • Arrive in Funchal, check into your cozy Airbnb, and hit the streets! Explore the many shops, restaurants, and take a walk along the waterfront overlooking the crashing waves. The city comes alive at night, so take a stroll on the cobblestone streets, soak in the lively atmosphere, and snap some pictures under the twinkling lights.
  • Dinnertime! Dive into Madeira’s culinary scene with fresh seafood. Try the Black Scabbard Fish, a local delicacy – you won’t regret it!

Day 2: Hike to Heaven (or Pico Ruivo)

  • Early Bird Gets the View: Set your alarm well before sunrise and enjoy the drive up the winding mountain roads to Pico do Arieiro. Witness the stunning moment when the sun chases away the clouds, revealing a majestic mountain panorama.
  • Packing Essentials: Be prepared for all types of weather! Pack layers for temperatures ranging from 5-25 degrees C (depending on the weather), it gets chilly at high altitudes! Don’t forget plenty of water (at least 2 liters), snacks, and good hiking shoes.
  • Conquer the Peaks: The Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike is considered moderate-to-hard, but the reward is undeniable – hands down the most breathtaking views in Madeira. This roundtrip hike is 10.8 km and takes 6-7 hours (including stops). It involves climbing stairs, navigating narrow paths along cliffs, and uneven terrain as you make your way from mountain peak to mountain peak. There’s a ranger station at Pico Ruivo (the halfway point) where you might find snacks and water before starting your return journey home.
  • Post-Hike Chill: Starting your hike at sunrise means you’ll be back by mid-afternoon, with plenty of time for a well-deserved siesta and relaxing dinner.

Day 3: Island Adventure Around the Clock

  • Full-Day Island Exploration: Leave Funchal by 9am to maximize your adventure. We recommend driving west to east, but the other way around works too!
  • Westward Bound:
    • Waterfall of the Angels: This quick stop offers a cool photo opportunity with water cascading onto the main road. Most people drive through it for a free car wash! We thought this stop was an overrated photo op, but was cool to see regardless!
    • Calheta Beach: Take a refreshing dip in the ocean by the man-made beach area, or enjoy a patio drink overlooking the water.
    • Porto Moniz: Feast your eyes on the stunning views and dramatic waves of this northern seaside town. Enjoy a delicious lunch at Conchina, and try their famous limpets – a Madeiran specialty! Or take a dip in the natural pools built right into the rocks.
  • Eastward Journey:
    • Seixal: Savour the phenomenal views with a coffee break at Avista Navios Snack Bar on the northern side of the island – perfect for capturing those postcard-worthy pictures.
    • Ponta do Bode: Witness the dramatic landscape on the east side of the island, with desert-like rock formations and dramatic cliffs. Take some pictures and explore the unique scenery.
    • Miradouro Ponta do Furado: Experience the easternmost tip of the island. If you have extra time, consider a hike here and watch the sunset dip behind the mountains.
  • Back to Funchal: Relax and enjoy the scenic drive back to Funchal, where you can unwind and enjoy a delicious farewell dinner.

Pro Tip:  Check the weather forecast and adjust your itinerary accordingly. You’ll want clear skies for your epic Pico do Ruivo hike!

Day 4: Farewell, Madeira!

  • Head to the airport, drop off your car, and take home unforgettable memories of your Madeiran adventure!
